Emergency Pack

What is an emergency pack?

Emergency packs are designed to illuminate even when mains power is lost, enabling occupants to escape in the event of an emergency which could cause a power cut, such as a fire.  We use high quality emergency components, which comply with current emergency lighting legislation and conform to CE standards.  The kits include a controller, additional LED, and rechargeable battery pack.  These are designed to provide emergency illumination for 3 hours.

See the emergency controller datasheet for more details.

The regulations

The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order, which came into force in October 2006, charges the responsible person of non-domestic premises and the common areas of a House in Multiple Occupancy (eg. Landlords and facilities managers) with the safety of everyone in the building, whether working, visiting or living there. This duty of care includes the provision of emergency lighting.  Article 14 (2) (h) of the RRFSO states:

“Emergency routes and exists requiring illumination must be provided with emergency lighting of adequate intensity in the case of failure of their normal lighting."  "It is particularly important the staircase and escape route are adequately lit as people may be in a state of distress, panic or disorientation when abruptly woken during a fire. This applies especially during the night."

IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTE
If you are using a GLS (E27) light source option WITH an emergency pack, please use an LED E27 lamp.  This is necessary because traditional filament incandescent bulbs tend to get fairly hot and can overheat components in the emergency pack.

When testing the emergency function and following activation of emergency mode, the permanent live must be renewed within 24 hours.   This is to avoid over discharge to the battery which may cause permanent damage to the battery pack.

Emergency lighting may suffer reduced battery duration when used in interiors which exceed 35°c ambient temperatures.

All emergency packs are offered with a 1 year warranty on battery packs and a 2 year warranty on inverters and other components.

Microwave Proximity Motion Sensor

What is a proximity sensor?

Proximity sensors allow motion (e.g. walking into a room) to trigger the light fitting to turn on.  This contributes to energy saving by ensuring the light is switched off when no-one is in the room.
As an added benefit, these particular sensors can also optionally be configured to only trigger when natural daylight is low (so lights do not illuminate during the day).

How does a microwave proximity sensor vary from other proximity sensors?

Microwave sensors can effectively see through solid objects.  This means that the sensor is not visible from outside of the light fitting, unlike PIR sensors which rely on a clear line of sight to work.

Can I configure the sensors to suit my needs?

Yes - the following settings can be easily adjusted by tweaking the DIP switches on the sensor module.

  • Detection range (Sensitivity / distance at which motion triggers the sensor):  100%, 75%, 50%, 30%, OFF
  • Hold Time (How long the light stays on after detecting movement): 10min, 20min, 30min
Minimum hold time should be not set to less than 10 minutes in order to avoid damage and reduce life span to the lighting components, otherwise this will invalidate the warranty.
  • Daylight threshold (Only allow the light to switch on in low levels of daylight): Disabled, 50 Lux, 20 Lux, 5 Lux, 2 Lux

Microwave Proximity Corridor Function

What is corridor function?

Luminaires with built in corridor function are a very simple and highly efficient way of reducing energy consumption. Wherever light has to be provided 24 hours a day for statutory reasons, the corridor function helps provide the right light, combined with energy-efficient and cost-effective operation. Dual circuit programmable function lighting offering ‘comfort level’ lighting of 50% when motion is not detected and 100% for a set period on activation of the hidden microwave sensor upon arrival of human activity within a prescribed area. We incorporate hidden presence detecting sensors within the luminaires, enabling the use of attractive light fittings to be used on an 'area to area' , 'room by room' or 'floor by floor' basis. The detecting sensors can be manually set to accommodate ‘daylight sensing’ lights on duration and separation of light source to give the best combination of energy efficiency usage and general ambience>

Can I configure the sensors to suit my needs?

Yes - corridor function packs can be configured in the same way as microwave proximity motion sensors (see details above), allowing you to set detection range, hold time and daylight threshold.  The key difference to the standard motion detector option is that instead of switching off, light fittings will switch to 50% output instead.

DALI Control Module

What is a DALI control module?

DALI is the name for a popular lighting control protocol that allows lights to be individually addressed and controlled via a central controller.  This allows complex lighting control, enabling different lighting "scenes" to be preset. - By doing so, the individual off/on state and dimming level (if applicable) can be set and assigned to each light for any given preset scene.

Is this a complete system?
No - This add-on module only adds DALI functionality to the light it's self - it is not a complete system.  You will also require further DALI hardware to control your lights as well as additional wiring to set up a complete DALI lighting control system.

  • Orders placed before 12pm Monday to Friday are dispatched the same day.
  • We use a reliable next day courier service as standard for all UK orders.
  • UK shipping is completely free.  We are also able to ship worldwide from just £40.
  • Unlike many other retailers, we are able to re-supply every fitting we have released since 1985, making replacements in future easy.

The SW9281 is a slim and compact up and down light with a shallow projection of just 72mm from the wall.  This light works well in medium to large rooms and spaces, and is ideally suited to use in bedrooms and stairwells, where a slim projection is desirable.

Supplied with this luminaire is a clear, frosted diffuser, designed to be fitted on at the bottom of the light, obscuring the fitting's innards, reducing glare and also softening and diffusing the light.

Our range of slat wall light fittings are ideally suited for minimalist design schemes and fit in well with Japanese, Scandinavian and Nordic style interiors,  comprising of a series of elegant natural oak/walnut veneered slats, each measuring 27mm in width and 12mm in depth. These slats are mounted on top of a black backing board to create a striking contrasting visual effect. The oak/walnut slats bring a unique warmth, texture and character whilst maintaining a sleek modern and clean-lined aesthetic compatible with the minimalist Scandi ethos or to match acoustic slat wall panels.

This fitting can also be specified with an optional non-maintained integral emergency pack. This pack consists of a backup battery and auxiliary LED, which automatically illuminates in the case of power failure, in order to provide safe exit from a building in an emergency. Provisions for emergency lighting are also a legal requirement in many non-domestic buildings, as well as HMOs.  The fitting's narrow profile is great for staircases, where a slim sconse is required to be unobtrusive and less likely to be accidentally knocked.

Please note that wood is a natural product and therefore has some natural variation in texture, grain and tone.

Tornado has been manufacturing hand-crafted luminaires since 1985 and we are able to provide replacements for every design we have every released. We are committed to promoting high-tech and energy efficient light sources, as well as sustainable and ethical manufacturing processes.
